Daryll Dobson: 5 String Jazz Violinist and Guitarist

The Transformation: From Jazz Guitarist to 5 String Jazz Violinist

Daryll Dobson is a 5 String Jazz Violinist and Guitarist, Music Producer, Audio Engineer and Videographer.
He began his formal jazz studies in New York at SUNY College at Old Westbury. The Jazz Studies program was founded by Jazz Multi Instrumentalist Ken McIntyre and Jazz Percussionist Warren Smith.

His first professional Jazz Gig was with Jazz Master Stanley Turrentine at Age 19! His solo recordings have included L. Shankar, Kenny Kirkland, Gerry Brown, Fernando Saunders, Tony Thunder Smith, Kenwood Dennard, Delmar Brown and several Indian Masters Shree Sundar Kumar and Neyvelli RadhaKrishna.

When Covid Restrictions locked us down in 2020 with masks on, Daryll Dobson did something incredible and daring! He sold his home and 99% of his worldly possessions and became a "Live Aboard Yachter" With just an acoustic guitar and a thirst for adventure he cruised to over 10 coastal cities, from Maryland to Sebastian, Florida perfecting his newly acquired mariner skills.

In 2021 he knew he would return to land living. The mask were coming off and music was coming back!

There was vast new knowledge learned and his new learning concept of “String Jazz Theory” was ready for his full exploration and application. So the new mission: Use the “String Jazz Theory” concept to accelerate the transfer all of his musical knowledge to a new instrument, the Electric 5 String Violin.

Jazz Times Review 2019 - Guitarist and composer Daryll Dobson and a tight, hard-working group offer Healing Intentions, a showcase for some dramatic, white-knuckle fusion, as well as a few oddball lighter pieces aimed at general audiences. The majority of Dobson’s Intentions play like a fusion lover’s headbanger’s ball, with heavy growl-to-squeal guitar work and big drum crescendos highlighting tracks like the Hendrix cover “Third Stone from the Sun,” and “With My Wings.” Dobson’s bristling, fleet electric solos also highlight an unexpected take on the Marvin Gaye classic “Trouble Man,” and skate madly over dark revolving bass undercurrents on the sometimes cacophonous “We Cannot Hear… the Killing Noise.” The odd pieces here are softer fare, like “Be the Light,” which finds Dobson stretching for a more spindly, clean sound. For the most part-down to long drum solo breaks and crazed distortion riffs-the guitarist stays true to his core Intentions, offering fusion which is not for the faint of heart. - Hilaire Grey
